How to learn chess as a beginner

The best way to learn chess is to practice the right move in a real position, then repeat it. You do not need a coach, a paid course, or a thousand puzzles on day one. You need a small set of positions you will actually meet, and a habit of drilling them.

Start smaller than you think

Pick one opening you can play with both sides of the board. The Italian Game — the Giuoco Piano — is a clean place to begin: you take the center, develop pieces, and learn a standard d4 break. Do not collect a repertoire. Collect one line you can play without looking it up.

Pair that with two checkmates: the two-rook mate and the king and rook mate. If you cannot convert a huge advantage, extra opening knowledge will not help.

Drill, then play, then drill again

Watch the idea once on learnchess.fun. Play the learner moves yourself. Come back the next day. Spaced repetition is the mechanism: the trainer shows you the line again before you forget it. That is a better chess trainer for beginners than scrolling through lectures.

After a few sessions, play real games on Chess.com or Lichess. Import them from Review when you have an account, and turn the messy moments into more drills. Learning chess online free works when the loop is short: idea, move, repeat, game, repeat.
